Indians continue to compete after the completion of our season

Several of the Soo Indians AAA players continued their season as affiliate players with the Soo Eagles on the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.  The following players made the jump playing with the Eagles, Sabre Koleber, Zach Sweitzer, Drew Dellies, Luke and Jack Jimenez all made an impact for the Eagles who finished the season with five straight wins to close out their regular season.  All the Indians staff continue to support them as the make the next step in hockey.

Soo Indians AAA 2023-24 prospect skate

The Soo Indians AAA Hockey Club will be holding a prospect skate for 05,06, and 07 birth year players on the weekend of April 15th and 16th in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan at the Big Bear Arena.  Skates will be on Saturday April 15th from 4:30 - 6:30 pm and Sunday April 16th from 9am - 11am, the cost of the skate will be $25.  All interested players should complete the player profile found at the play for us tab on the website and forward along with the fee to Mike Kaunisto at 2911 S. Riverside Drive Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan 49783.  Questions concerning the skate and team should be directed to Mike Kaunisto @ 906-440-0157 or Dan Lasley @ 906-322-1143.

For players coming from out of town for the skate, Kewadin Casino and Hotels will be offering special room rates for the Soo Indians spring skate.  Ask for the Soo Indians room block for reduced room rate.

Jerry Lortie Jr. joins the Indians Coaching staff

The Soo Indians AAA Hockey Club is excited to announce that Jerry Lortie Jr. will be joining the Indians coaching staff.  Lortie a native of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario has deep ties to area while playing and continued to stay involved in the game as minor hockey coach with both the Bantam and Midget Minor AAA hockey clubs in Sault Ontario.  Along with coaching Jerry has had several positions in recruiting, development, and scouting in the Northern Ontario and USA Midwest area.

All the Indians staff are excited for the upcoming 2023-24 to compete for a Michigan State Championship and the compete in Tier 1 Hockey Federation League.

Indians go 1 and 2 on the road in Detroit

Friday night pitted the Indians up against Belle Tire at Taylor in the first of three league games on the Weekend.  Belle Tire opened the scoring 5 minutes in the first period on a powerplay to take the early lead and held it until the 8 second mark of the period when Brayden Grange scored, from Gabe Fisher and Luke Jimenez to even the score at the end of the first period.  In the second period Belle Tire opened up a two goal lead heading into the third period and early in the third Grange capitalized for his second goal of the game on a power play from Fisher and Owen Hendrikson to get the Indians back within 1 goal.  From that point on they Indians pressed hard for the tying goal however the game end with the 3-2 score.  Cam Labadie played excellent between the pipes in a losing effort.

On Saturday the Indians traveled to Plymouth to take on Compuware in the first of two games.  Compuware opened the scoring late in first for the lead, however the Indians answered back in the second when Brayden Grange scored on a power play from Gabe Fisher.  Late in the second period Compuware regained the lead, but two minutes later Drew Dellies hit Zach Sweitzer with a breakaway pass that he buried to even things up at 2.  With 1:51 remaining Gabe Fisher threaded a shot the point past their netminder to put the Indians up 1.  Cam Labadie turned away all the remaining shots to preserve the 3-2 win.

Sundays rematch turned out to be a low scoring game as Compuware again scored the first goal before Brayden Grange scored his 4th goal of the weekend to even the score.  Both teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the second period and third until with 1:03 remaining Compuware for the net and took the 2-1 win.  Cam Labadie had the duties in net for the Indians.

The next action for the Indians will be at home this coming weekend when they will take on the number nationally ranked Little Caesars team Saturday 430pm at the Pullar Staduim and a rematch Sunday morning 10am at the Taffy Abel Arena.

Indians join the Tier 1 Hockey Federation League for the 2023-2024 Season

The Soo Indians announced that they will be joining the Tier 1 Hockey Federation League for the 2023/24 season.  The League includes teams from all over the United States from the East to West Coast in which all teams will converge on several sites throughout the year for league play and playoffs for players to get the maximum exposure to both College and Jr teams.  The Indians will continue to also play in the Michigan Amateur Hockey League for a chance at a Michigan State Championship and a bid to the USA National tournament.
